Programme Insights

My dream job would be being a portfolio manager for an asset management company in equities.

[Campus Life. Edoardo Valsetti. Student in Msc in Financial Engineering]

I did my bachelor's degree at Bocconi University. I studied economics and management and then after graduation in 2019, I decided to move at EDHEC to study finance and Financial Engineering, in particular.

[What is Financial Engineering?]

Financial Engineering is the application of quantitative methods in the field of finance. So you study different subjects that can prepare you and will prepare you to work closely on the different financial markets. When I was deciding about my master’s opportunities and choices, I realised that EDHEC has this three years programme with a foundation year in M1, and then it gives you the opportunity to specialise in one of the finance areas. And you have a lot of choices. And that's why I decided to join EDHEC, because of the completeness of the programme.

For the first part of my gap year, I studied quant finance
at BI Norwegian Business School in Oslo, and then I worked
as an investment advisor for a private bank in Luxembourg, Quintet Private Bank. So I stayed there for six months and then I finished my gap year working as an investment banking summer analyst  for a company called FT Partners,
which is an investment banking boutique in
in London, focused on Fintech deals.

[A highlight from the programme?]

I attended the alumni spotlights, which are sessions organised by the school with alumni coming from different job fields,
from trading, asset management and so on and so forth.
And we do these sessions with them talking about their job, talking about like career advice, they have for us, how they see
the financial markets right now.
What’s their opinion about the future, if they have any advice for applicants...
So it's really ...it's really a good opportunity we have.

[Becoming a Finance professional through Students' associations]

In the EDHEC Student Finance Club, we have four different divisions.
The Publishing division, the Newsletter division, the Sustainable Finance division and the Portfolio Management division.
You have the opportunity, besides classes, to develop a set of soft skills. That's definitely helps you a lot during interviews,
but also during your normal life, your everyday life.

Financial engineering is the branch of finance that specialises in using mathematics, engineering, programming and financial theory to solve financial problems and create new products. It is used by organisations such as banks, insurance companies, hedge funds or corporate finance departments.

To achieve their goals, financial engineers use advanced mathematical models and computer science to develop new products and find new investment opportunities. They use their analytical skills and models to assess the likelihood of an investment being successful in the long term and to evaluate the risks involved.

Risk management is the process of identifying, analysing and mitigating the uncertainty and risk involved in investment decisions.

Financial engineering is an important tool to reduce the risks of investment. Using advanced analysis and mathematical models, risk professionals can help their clients find the perfect balance between risk and profitability.

Financial engineering has many ethical considerations that professionals must take into account. Transparency, fairness and avoiding conflicts of interest are some of the most important in the sector. Finance is also regulated by a number of laws and regulations that professionals must comply with to ensure ethical practices.

In recent decades, growing concerns about climate change, the environment and social issues have started to influence finance in general. Financial engineers are now beginning to take these issues into account in their investment decisions. For corporate finance departments, this has a strategic aspect, as consumers are less likely to buy products or services from a company that doesn't meet their ethical standards.
