“The hands-on approach is perfect!"

Iuliana Kapitonova, from Russia, chose the MSc in Marketing Management to pursue her studies. The Eiffel scholarship recipient shares her first experiences on the EDHEC’s Lille campus.

WHAT IS YOUR EDUCATIONAL BACKGROUND PRIOR TO EDHEC?

I have a Bachelor’s degree from Moscow State University of International Relations with a major in Public Relations. A field that I was lucky to work in as a part-time Account Assistant at PR-agency Ketchum Moscow during my studies. This professional experience is also, I believe a plus when applying to European universities.

WHY DID YOU CHOOSE EDHEC?

I did some research on the programmes and there were only two on my shortlist. One in the Netherlands and EDHEC, in France. I chose EDHEC after a talk with a Russian representative and with current and former students. I knew France and Lille because I was an exchange student at Science Po Lille. I felt the French culture would be closer to me and also, I wanted to keep practising my French!

Why do you think Eiffel chose you among thousands of candidates?

I believe primarily because of the exchange programme I did with Science Po, my high level of French language proficiency, excellent academic performance, and experience in organizing various events. They saw me as a responsible, versatile person who can successfully combine studies, work and other projects.

What do you expect from scholarship status of the French government? Do you feel proud?

The Eiffel Scholarship is a great honour for me. I think this is a very important status indicator, especially in connection with my professional life in France.

HOW HAS BEEN YOUR JOURNEY AT EDHEC SO FAR?

I appreciate the hands-on approach of the MSc in Marketing Management. It’s very intense because we have several case studies to lead at the same time. But it’s also a real introduction into the ever-evolving marketing field. I’m glad to be here! I have chosen to apply for the Luxury & Fashion concentration to match my interests. When I worked for Ketchum Moscow, I had Hyatt Hotels Corporation as a client and I enjoyed working on managing the brand. So, this concentration matches my interests and my willingness to tailor customer experience, to create a valuable and durable customer/brand connection and to innovate.

WHAT ARE THE MAIN SKILLS YOU WANT TO ACQUIRE?

I did not have that much experience of working in project teams. Something quite necessary for the marketing field. I have learnt that in a team, everyone should play a particular role: be a leader, be in charge of operations, creativity or criticism, everything counts. A role that suits a person and will help create a team spirit. I’m also looking forward to learning more about marketing research and research methods.

WHAT ARE YOUR EXPECTATIONS FROM THE COMING STEPS? WHAT ARE YOUR JOB ASPIRATIONS?

I’m thinking of two fields I would like to work in brand management or digital marketing. There are actions to develop in each of these fields. I’d like to intern at L’Oréal. I’m confident that I’ll get some guidance from the individual coaching services that the Career Centre organises to achieve this goal.

DO YOU HAVE ANY ADVICE FOR FUTURE ABROAD STUDENTS?

Do not be afraid to apply to European universities. Don’t think the education you received in your country is not suitable to pursue studies abroad. Start your research ahead of time, at least one year before you graduate to pick the right university for you. Also, don’t wait to take the GMAT and the IELTS. I passed them in a rush! It’s stressful!

HAVE YOU BROUGHT SOMETHING SPECIAL FROM RUSSIA WITH YOU?

I've brought memorable photos of my family and friends and decorated my room with them. Also, my parents came to visit me in October and brought me some Russian specialties that are not easy to find in France and that I started missing: red caviar and buckwheat, the latter we eat as a side dish.
