Meet a student: "China + France = Chance"

Written on 27 Jan 2022.

Shuyun Pan joined the EDHEC Business Management program in 2019 and will graduate from the renowned business school in 2022. Shuyun gained extensive experience in marketing during her professional immersion year. She chose to join the MSc in Data Analytics & Artificial Intelligence to master business data analysis for her Master 2.

You joined EDHEC MiM-Business Management in 2019 after a Bachelor’s degree in International Business. Why did you decide to study at EDHEC Business School?

There are many business schools to choose from around the world. The reason why I chose EDHEC is that the school offers a future full of possibilities.

Firstly, EDHEC offers business classes with a touch of French culture. Many of the Chinese students are immersed in the American culture, and fewer of us know about French culture. Studying at EDHEC offers you a chance to communicate with your French classmates through teamwork and other offline events, which contribute to diversifying your global view. Secondly, the 3-year Grande Ecole program offers international students the opportunity to really immerse themselves in French society and build close ties with companies.

Did you receive a scholarship?

Yes. And receiving a scholarship was a big relief for my financial situation, I can save money for future expenditures in France. It meant a lot to me.

Did the school support you to settle in France?

Yes. The International Students Office does really help a lot. For example, the team provided me with many choices for my apartment. In France, it is hard to find an apartment on your own, because most of the time, the landlord requires a guarantor to ensure that you can pay the rent. That can be really hard for an international student who doesn’t know anyone in France. EDHEC cooperates with several websites to ensure students can rent an apartment without a guarantee.

Other benefits include: inviting the officer to come to our school to collect our documents for extending our visa. As far as I know, many Parisian schools don’t have this kind of service, students who need to stay in France for more than one year, have to make an appointment with the police station on their own to get the Titre de séjour étudiant. It is nightmare for students who don’t speak French to update their visas. But EDHEC is totally aware of that and helps out.

To sum it up, the International Students Office will help you with any challenges you face.

What aspects of the MiM program do you enjoy the most? What has been the most rewarding part of the program?

The best part of this program is the professional immersion year. After one year of study, we are able to apply the skills we learned in class and better understand what we want to dive into for the third year of the program, the Master 2. The most rewarding part is the program’s close ties to the business world, which enables us to deal with real-world cases.

You were in your professional year from September 2020 to August 2021. Can you tell us about your internships?

For my gap year, I spent one year in Paris enhancing my skills in marketing. I had my first internship at WITH Paris Agency, a company that helps brands solve social commerce issues. This first internship allowed me to improve my hard skills and soft skill with the help of my manager. For my second internship, I joined Ecentime. My missions were also focused on marketing. I have also learned to organise many offline events in Paris. I really appreciated the colleagues I met in both companies.

You are a Master 2 student. You chose the MSc in DA & AI. What are the main highlights of this program?

Learning a hard skill is what interested me the most about this major. After the first semester, I have acquired a lot of knowledge about statistics and some analytics tools such as Python, Tableau, Google Analytics. The course is also understandable for students without a background in computer science. EDHEC also provides students access to materials to help them better understand what they learn. During the second semester, there are two concentrations (Business Analytics Track or Data Science Track) that students can choose from based on their interests.

You are the vice-president of the CCDU. Can you tell us about your association?

CCDU is a student association dedicated to serving all Chinese alumni worldwide and those who have an interest in China. Our mission is to consolidate Alumni resources and build a commercial bridge between China and France. We believe that China + France = Chance.

What are your future career goals?

My short-term career goal is to find a business analysis internship based in France in FMCG or the financial service industry. My long-term career goal is to become an expert in this field.

What has been the greatest opportunity you have had at EDHEC?

EDHEC has a really good reputation in France, which gives us a lot of advantages when we apply for an internship. Moreover, the alumni resources of EDHEC help a lot.

What advice would you give someone who is thinking about applying for the program?

Understand how this program can help you to fulfill your future career goals and how to create a win-win situation for both the school and you.

Be brave and be confident during the interviews and be prepared.
