Students studying in France, regardless of their nationality, can benefit from state support for their living expenses. It is estimated that you will need around 1000 EUR per month to finance your daily expenses while living in France. To help you budget your finances we have listed a few resources to help you understand how much everyday items cost in France.

 

1.  Health Insurance

 

Foreign students are advised to acquire student health coverage. A basic coverage plan is between 150 to 220 Euros per academic year. Check below link for national student health-care plan ("Sécurité sociale") and supplemental group plans ("Mutuelle").

  • check-up with a general practitioner : 25 € (16,50 € reimbursed)
  • check-up with a dentist: 23 € (the amount reimbursed depends on the type of dental work performed)

On average, depending on the city, a gym membership is between 20 - 80 € a month.

 

2. Accommodation

 

Private accomodation:

  • Private room in a flat can range from 400 to 580 € per month
  • Studio can range from 580 to 750 € per month
  • One bedroom flat (+ living room) from 670 to 880 € per month
  • Two bedrooms flat (+ living room) from 950 to 1200 € per month

Student Residence:

  • Private student residence from 460 to 695 € per month
  • Home insurance about 60 € including theft insurance per year
  • Electricity about 30 - 50 €per month
  • Landline phone + internet wi-fi about 20-40 € per month
  • Water is normally included in your rental charges, if not, it is about 15 € per month
  • Yearly local residence tax is usually one month's rent

 

3. Food

 

On average, your monthly food budget will be between 150 and 250 Euros per month depending on your lifestyle.

  • Full Lunch at EDHEC cafeteria: 6.50 to 7 € per meal
  • Sandwich at EDHEC cafeteria: 3.50 - 4 € per sandwich
  • Coffee in a cafe or restaurant: 1.50 - 1.90 €
  • Croissant: 0.65 - 0.95 Cents
  • 6 eggs 1.50 - 2.10 €
  • 1 kg of pasta: 1.50 €
  • 1 ltr of milk: 1.20 - 1.65 €

 

4. Transportation

 

  • Local transportation* (bus, tramway):
- 1.50 to 1.90 € per ticket one way
-  24.70 or 28.60 € monthly
-  228.50 - 342 € yearly

  • Transportation by train* within France:
- Lille to Paris: 25 - 50 €
- Paris to Nice: 50 - 100 €
* prices may vary depending on the city
If you are between 18 - 27 you are eligible for railcards and can get a 30% discount any time of the year. The registration fee is 50 € . For more information check the sncf website.
 
  • Transportation by Flight*:
- Nice – Paris: 35 to 100 € 
- Lille - Nice: 40 to 260 €

5. Leisure

 

  • A cinema ticket (reduced student prices): 7 to 9.30 €  depending on the city and theatre ticket: starting at 10 Euros
  • A soft drink in a café:  4 - 6 € 
  • A meal in a restaurant: 10 - 25 €  (depending on the city & restaurant type)
  • Entry for a museum or national monument: under 26 or between 4 and 15 €
